• Tourism Director (Full-Time)


     

  • Position Summary

     

    The Tourism Director will execute plans to promote business and recreational activities, events and conventions to grow the BBB and BID tax revenues. The Tourism Director must be an innovative and creative personality who is responsible for marketing the Yankton region in a cohesive manner to increase tourism and large-scale events. Comprehensive marketing plans will need to be developed and implemented in an inclusive manner. This position handles highly confidential material.

     

    The Yankton Area Chamber of Commerce is currently exploring a potential merger with the local economic development group. Whether or not a merger is completed, this position will be a Director of the organization and needs to possess the leadership skills to lead a successful team.

    Responsibilities

    • Travel and participate in trade shows and conferences to promote Yankton
    • Work closely with SD Tourism and industry partners to be on the cusp of developing ideas and programs
    • Provide data to educate City Commissioners, City Manager, BID board and community leaders on ways to support tourism
    • Create publication to enhance tourism and large-scale events
    • Oversee and facilitate distribution of publications
    • Support convention and large-scale events in the Yankton region
    • Work proactively with organized groups to prepare and present written bids for conferences, events, tournaments and meetings
    • Develop and maintain a database of events for future recruitment
    • Track requests for relocation and visitor information
    • Maintain memberships, within confines of the budget, in major industry organizations and associations, attend seminars and conferences for personal growth and creation of value for Yankton
    • Welcome group events, deliver opening remarks as requested, host groups and organizations
    • Conduct FAM tours and hospitality training as needed
    • Formulate plans, organize and administer objectives for the tourism strategic goals outlined in the organizational strategic plan
    • Work closely with CEO and organizational directors and coordinators to create collaborative programs to meet strategic goals
    • Create and implement a program for tourism to meet or exceed budgetary goals
    • Assist in preparation of organizational and committee budgets
    • Serve on committees and boards that are active in tourism and community development
    • Assist with City of Yankton funding application
    • Oversee assigned committees/programs and ensure their focused activities align with strategic and programmatic goals
    • Work with CEO on job descriptions and assignment of duties of employees in the tourism program
    • Supervise and train employee(s) assigned to work in the tourism program via a management style that promotes teamwork and accountability
    • Coordinate with other programs to create collaborative marketing plans and materials necessary for the communication of information via print, website, social media, etc.
    • Facilitate discussions with Business Services Director or staff for program or committee event materials and marketing needed to professionally execute activities and meet strategic goals
    • Collaborate with the Business Services Director to develop or enhance program materials and marketing plans to facilitate growth in tourism business
    • Participate in discussions with CEO regarding opportunities for development projects
    • Manage tourism budget and regularly communicate with CEO and Finance Director to ensure efficient use of funds
    • Communication clearly with CEO regarding business and community policy and advocacy topics
    • Provide and receive regular communication with the CEO on work activities
    • Participate actively in brainstorming and implementation regarding ways to improve the organization and tourism marketing efforts
    • Build and maintain professional relationships with industry peers, coworkers, members, investors, businesses, human resource professionals and other key stakeholders in the region to learn about best practices and new opportunities
    • Assist as requested in Capital Campaigns
    • Assume additional responsibilities as needed
    • Maintain strict confidentiality for proprietary information of members, non-members and projects

     

    Qualifications

     

    Knowledge of:

    • Visitor industry standards
    • Marketing and advertising standards and trends
    • Regional economic conditions
    • Business English, including grammar, spelling and punctuation
    • Modern office practices, procedures and equipment
    • Microsoft Office 365 (especially Outlook, Word, Excel, OneDrive and SharePoint)

    Education/Experience

    • Required experience of at least 3 years in marketing, advertising, sales, business or visitor industries or bachelor's degree in a related field
