A leader in downtown re-development from Hastings, Nebraska will visit Yankton on Tuesday and Wednesday (Aug. 6-7) to share ideas and success stories.
Randy Chick is the executive director of Hastings’ Community Redevelopment Authority, a group that has led a revitalization of that city by prioritizing exterior renovation and preservation, and upper level development of historic buildings. Lofts and apartments in Hastings have become popular living spaces and downtown residents have provided a spark for main floor shops and restaurants.
Yankton’s Meridian District members visited Hastings for ideas earlier this year and Chick agreed to come to Yankton to talk about his experiences. He will tour the community on Tuesday evening and speak at One Million Cups at 9 a.m. Wednesday. The public is invited to attend the Wednesday morning event at the Discovery Church downtown.
Hastings and Yankton have much in common; both are cities that lie away from an interstate, both have small colleges and both benefit from manufacturing and agriculture. Both also have central business districts with dozens of under-utilized, century-old brick buildings that present unique challenges and opportunities.
