The Yankton Youth Soccer Association is proud to be hosting its 4th annual indoor soccer tournament, Dam Fireworks River City Rumble January 11-13th! The tournament last was a great success and this year even more teams will be coming to Yankton to play soccer this year! We will host 64 teams from the Tri-State area ranging from Sioux City, Sioux Falls, Mitchell, Watertown, Tea & more. Over 500 players and 2000 people are expected to be in town for the event. The event will be hosted at the Yankton Middle School & the Boys & Girls Club of Yankton. With the success of the tournament last year, YYSA partnered again this year with the BGC.
Yankton indoor soccer has drastically grown in the state over the last 6 years. According to the South Dakota State Soccer Association, there are 16 soccer tournaments in about 12 weeks over the winter. “Indoor soccer has become a great way to have fun and work on your skills at the same time. The Game is very fast and full of energy. Indoor has become a huge success in many communities across the country. Indoor is a lot different than outdoor," comments Warren Brenner, YHS Soccer Coach.
Yankton currently has 22 indoor teams playing this weekend and roughly 130 players that play soccer during the winter. It is that popularity that encouraged Tournament Directors Laurie Brenner and Sondra Jensen to continue the indoor event this year providing a local venue for Yankton teams to play and creating a fundraising opportunity for Yankton soccer players. “My sons always loved playing indoor soccer. After kicking an indoor tournament idea around for a couple of years, Sondra and I put our heads together and decided we could make it a reality. Mr. Mors and YSD allowed us to schedule a weekend and started the ball rolling. I, for one, am so excited that we are able to put this together, that we can continue to raise funds to help pay for permanent fields and to provide a positive experience for the youth soccer players in Yankton and the surrounding area” states Laurie Brenner Tournament Co-Director.
YYSA is proud to partner again this year with Dam Fireworks for the indoor event. “It’s the support and partnership of an amazing sponsor like Dam Fireworks that makes an event like this possible,” states Sondra Jensen, Tournament Co-Director and Sponsorship Chair for YYSA. “This event couldn’t happen without the support of the Yankton School District and the Boys & Girls Club. Their partnership with YYSA has been amazing! It is commitments like these that grow our program and change the face of soccer in Yankton. ‘Thank you’ just isn’t a big enough word,” states Jensen. “Anytime we can partner with an organization in town that provides our youth with an opportunity to be part of an activity we are all in. The indoor soccer event is tremendous for economic development, which brings a lot folks to Yankton. We are extremely proud of the facilities we have in the Yankton School District and partnering with groups such as soccer is a win/win for everybody, most importantly the kids involved,” comments Dr. Kindle
