Emergency Medical Services
Yankton County Emergency Medical Services employs one full-time paramedic administrator, and three full-time paramedics who take turns staffing an advanced life support vehicle 24 hours a day. YCEMS has a fleet of four ambulances that is staffed by 45 volunteers who work in twelve hour shifts. Yankton County EMS responds to an average of 1,200 calls for service each year. YCEMS also transports patients from Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton to larger facilities in Sioux Falls, Sioux City, Omaha, Rochester and Minneapolis. At times, patients are transported from Avera Sacred Heart Hospital to nursing homes in southeast South Dakota or northeast Nebraska.

The Avera Sacred Heart Emergency Department provides 24-hour, daily physician coverage for patients who have experienced an injury or facing a life-threatening situation.
The department has six treatment rooms and the staff is highly qualified and trained in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).

The Emergency Department offers Level III emergency care consisting of:

  •    24-Hour Coverage

  •    Advanced Life Transport

  •    Fixed wing and helicopter transport as needed to area hospitals.

  •    Easy access and rapid response by a specially trained team.
